Seminar on River Management in Bangladesh Held at Habiganj Agricultural University
A seminar titled “Micropollutants in the River Systems of Bangladesh” was held at Habiganj Agricultural University. The main objective of the seminar was to discuss the challenges of protecting the health of Bangladesh’s rivers and addressing environmental pollution.
The seminar was organized by the Faculty of Agriculture on Monday (17 November) at the Conference Room of Academic Building 1 of the university. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Syed Sayeem Uddin Ahmed, attended as the chief guest. The guest speaker was Associate Professor Dr. Jerker Berglund Fick from the Department of Chemistry at Umeå University. The special guest was Professor Dr. F. M. Aminuzzaman, Director of SOURES at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.
Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Kaiyum, Chairman of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, delivered a technical presentation at the seminar. The discussions focused on developing a deeper understanding of the sources, impacts, and management strategies of micropollutants in Bangladesh’s river systems, as well as highlighting the importance of sustainable and resilient agricultural development.
Speakers presented detailed scientific analyses on the sources, characteristics, and harmful impacts of microplastics, pharmaceutical waste, and other micropollutants present in Bangladesh’s rivers. The seminar also highlighted the adverse effects of river pollution on aquatic life and human health.
The presentation on “Micropollutants in the River Systems of Bangladesh” was delivered by Md. Shakir Ahmed, Lecturer of the Department of Environmental Science at Habiganj Agricultural University.
In his speech, the chief guest stated that micropollutants in Bangladesh’s river systems are extremely harmful to human life and pose a serious threat to future generations. He emphasized the importance of research and public awareness in preventing river pollution and urged researchers to develop sustainable solutions for managing agricultural waste.
Speakers also noted that strict enforcement of environmental laws, the use of modern waste treatment technologies, and training for farmers and industrial entrepreneurs are essential to control river pollution.
At the end of the seminar, Dr. Md. Abubakar Siddik, Member Secretary of the Organizing Committee and Acting Associate Director of the External Affairs Division, expressed gratitude to all participants and concluded the program by seeking everyone’s cooperation in protecting the environment.
