HAU Takes Initiative to Establish International Language Education Centre, Introduces Japanese as Third Language

With the aim of expanding opportunities for higher education, research, and employment at the international level and enhancing students’ multilingual skills, Habiganj Agricultural University (HAU) has taken an initiative to establish an International Language Education Centre. At the same time, in line with the current government’s election manifesto and the recommendations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, the Academic Council unanimously decided to introduce Japanese as a third language, alongside Bangla and English.

The decision was taken at the 11th meeting of the Academic Council, held on Thursday (8 October) in the university’s Conference Room. The meeting was chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of Habiganj Agricultural University, Professor Dr. Md. Mozammel Hoque. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Ismail Hossain was also present.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on establishing the International Language Education Centre with the aim of equipping students to compete globally and reducing language barriers in higher education and employment opportunities. Through the proposed centre, students will have opportunities to learn foreign languages and develop their international communication skills.

In particular, Japanese has been selected as the third language, considering the growing opportunities for higher education, research, technical training, and employment in Japan. Once the initiative is implemented, students of the university are expected to have the opportunity to learn Japanese through an institutional framework. Subsequently, courses in other international languages may also be introduced.

In addition, an initiative has been taken to formulate a statute for conducting the activities of the proposed International Language Education Centre. The proposed statute will be placed before the university’s next Syndicate meeting for approval. Subject to approval by the Syndicate, further steps will be taken to commence the institutional activities of the centre.

Alongside the initiative to establish the language education centre, the Academic Council meeting discussed and took decisions on various important matters related to the improvement of the university’s academic and educational activities.

The initiative is expected to play a significant role in enhancing students’ language skills, facilitating their participation in international higher education and research, and strengthening their competitiveness in both domestic and international job markets.
